Residential 240 Volt Wiring
Sooner or later, you are going to come to the realization that you have or need 240 Volt wiring in your home. Wait! You may be asking if it’s 220 or 240 Volts. To be sure, many people around the world do use 220 Volt services that split into 110 Volts in the home. However, in the United States, we actually use a 240 Volt service that splits into 120 Volts. So, you are in the right place. When the electricity is dispersed at the panel, it is usually wired for 120 Volts, which is the voltage for the common outlet in a home. But, as with anything, there are definitely exceptions. These exceptions require 240 Volt outlets. These would accommodate things like stoves, water heaters, air conditioners, dryers, well pumps, electric cars and so on. In fact, most modern homes are wired to accommodate the various appliances that call for 240 Volt outlets. Being such, it is often found throughout more recently built homes. What, however, if the home is older? In this case, the home may have only been wired to handle 120 Volt equipment. The different 120 Volt and 240 Volt outlets cannot be used interchangeably and can cause serious damage to your appliances or your person. They have very specific uses and that is why the outlet itself often looks quite different between the 120 Volt and 240 Volt.
Solving the 240 Volt Dilemma
If your home is older than the 1970s, you may only have a 100 Amp service. Not to worry though, this does not necessarily mean that you will need a complete rewire of your home. What it does mean, however, is that additional circuits would need to be added to your electrical panel or fuse box to accommodate the additional load of these different modern appliances. A service upgrade may also be required. An experienced electrician is recommended to correct this issue and bring your wiring up to code safely.
