Why Add 240-Volt Outlets in Your Home?

Sooner or later, you are going to come to the realization that you might need 240-volt wiring in your home. Many people around the world use 220-Volt services that split into 110 volts in the home. However, in the United States, we actually use a 240-volt service that splits into 120 volts.

When the electricity is dispersed at the panel, it is usually wired for 120 volts, which is the voltage for the common outlet in a home. However, as with anything, there are exceptions.

These exceptions require 240-volt outlets to accommodate things like:

  • Stoves
  • Water heaters
  • Air conditioners
  • Dryers
  • Well pumps
  • Electric cars

In fact, most modern homes are wired to accommodate the various appliances that call for 240-volt outlets. As such, these outlets are common throughout more recently built homes. What if the home is older? In this case, the home may have only been wired to handle 120-volt equipment. The different 120-volt and 240-volt outlets cannot be used interchangeably and can cause serious damage to your appliances or your person. They have very specific uses and that is why the outlet itself often looks quite different whether it is a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet.

Solving the Dilemma for Older Homes

If your home was built in the 1970 or earlier, you may only have 100-amp service. Not to worry though, this does not necessarily mean that you will need a complete rewiring of your home. What it does mean, however, is that additional circuits might need to be added to your electrical panel or fuse box to accommodate the additional load of these different modern appliances. A service upgrade may also be required. An experienced Tampa electrician is recommended to correct this issue and bring your wiring up to code safely.

Small Jobs Electric® will have your electrical system working smoothly without delay with our “Service in a Flash®” guarantee. Call (813) 652-0565 now and schedule your appointment today!
