Hurricane Electrical Preparations And Recovery Service In A Flash

Hurricane Electrical Preparations and Recovery

Sadly, hurricane electrical preparations and recovery is a fact of life in Florida. In fact, according to ESFI, there have been 114 hurricanes that have made landfall in Florida since 1851. That is almost as many as Texas and Louisiana combined. Just this year, we have already had 2 significant hurricanes, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. At Small Jobs Electric ®, our electricians know what an impact hurricanes can have on our lives and the lives of our families. We take hurricanes seriously. Whether it’s before the storm or any associated electrical recovery work afterwards, we are especially equipped to help. We have a clear emergency plan so that we can be there when you need us the most. In fact, it’s a way of life at Small Jobs Electric ® to be available and on call for our customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Electrical Hurricane Preparation

Hurricanes tend to pop up quickly in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. It is a good idea to think ahead and prepare. Generators are one of the main ways to prepare for loss of electricity. If you plan to use a generator in an emergency, a transfer switch needs to be installed. A professional electrician is needed to make sure it is connected properly. In an emergency situation, you don’t want to find out that it doesn’t operate properly. Also, you should make sure that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are tested ahead of time and are in good working order. Last but not least, if there is imminent threat from a storm, remember to unplug anything that could be effected by a power surge like your appliances and electronic devices.

Electrical Safety During a Hurricane

Water and electricity just don’t mix. If water starts to creep into the home, it’s time to think about shutting off the electrical breakers. Avoid standing water if at all possible. This is especially true when there are any power lines close by. Safety with electricity is life-saving. Because of the dangers involved with electricity, installing a surge protector now could prevent bigger problems in the future. In addition, generators should never be used in an enclosed area such as the home or even garages.

After The Storm

After a hurricane do not assume you can flip the breaker back on if the waters have receded. This is especially true if the water reached the height of any electrical outlets. An electrician should be called out to determine if it is safe to restore electricity in the home after a hurricane. All appliances should also be examined to determine what can be saved. It is advised not to plug back in until this has been done. Many times, homes will require rewiring and panel work done. Planning and educating yourself now for hurricane electrical preparations and recovery, can help you to be organized in the event of devastation from a hurricane.
