Solar Battery Storage – Is it for You?

If you are in the process of adding solar to your home, the question often arises if you should add solar battery storage to your system. This is a great question and one we will try to help you navigate here. It really comes down to 2 things: Your budget and the reasons you would like to add this battery backup solution. If, after you look through these two main points, you feel it’s a viable solution for you, you can then see how battery backup works and integrates with your solar system.

Why Add Battery Backup?

To start with, if you are not living out away from civilization, off-grid living is not a possibility. However, battery backup can help you navigate various situations you might encounter. For example, if you frequently lose power in your area or are prone to natural disasters which could leave you without power for an extended period of time, solar battery storage may be a great solution for you. Also, if someone in your household requires life sustaining medical equipment that run by electricity, battery storage may be a necessary solution. Finally, if you are concerned about the environmental impact of fossil fuel energy production, backup energy storage would level up your level of environmental protection efforts. These are all valid and great reasons to add a battery system to your solar installation.

What is the Cost of Battery Storage?

But what about your budget? Well, this is certainly a consideration. Battery back up can add anywhere between 10 – 15k per battery. In addition, one battery is often not sufficient to run an entire home for an extended period of time. As a result, oftentimes several batteries are required to provide a steady supply of battery during an electrical outage or overnight. This, of course, can add up depending on how many batteries you would like to add to your home solar system. However, due to current rebates, it may be a good time to add solar battery storage and benefit from the rebates before they are no longer available.

How Do the Solar Batteries Work?

Under normal circumstances, the solar system installed on a home will only provide power to your home during daylight hours. Quite simply, the batteries provide back up power when the grid is down or at night when the sun is not shining. It is important to understand that, in most cases, the local laws do not allow customers to completely disconnect from the grid. So, as energy is produced during the day, any excess is sent to the grid. Then, the power is returned from the grid once the sun goes down. This also serves to reduce the amount of electricity needed from the power company. In turn, you would only pay the lower tier electricity costs for extra energy needs due to your systems production. Thankfully, if the grid is down during the day, some recent advances allow you to use your solar system during daylight hours even without back up batteries. However, there would be no electricity outside of daytime hours.

Smart switch technology with battery integration now helps you to store that energy and continue to power your home after the sun sets. This smart power solution would detect outages and automatically switch to the proper systems to provide continuous electricity during these events. However, the amount of electricity available during these outages would vary greatly depending on the size of your battery backup system. For example, one battery would only service critical systems like the refrigerator and a few outlets but would not run a whole home or air conditioning systems. If you desire greater electrical access during outages, several batteries would need to be installed to provide optimal energy supply to the home. Of course, additional batteries can be added at any time. So you haven’t missed the boat if you did not install enough right from the beginning, so that may relieve some battery anxiety.
